St. Patrick's Day Mass at Most Holy Trinity Church

Issued:March 16, 2009

Allen H. Vigneron, archbishop of Detroit, will be the principal celebrant and homilist at the annual St. Patrick's Day Mass at 12 noon on Tuesday, March 17th, at Most Holy Trinity Church, located at Porter and Sixth Streets, in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood.

Traditionally, people of Irish descent, as well as many civic, business, and political leaders, gather on St. Patrick's Day at Most Holy Trinity for this Mass, known as the "Sharin' O' the Green." The "green" refers to the paper money put into the collection basket in support of parish outreach to the poor through medical clinics and other neighborhood programs.

Serving as chairpersons of the event are Patrick and Mary Callaghan Lynch of Birmingham. He is a Clawson funeral director and she is a professional vocalist. Co-chairpersons will be Ron Gettelfinger, president of the UAW and his wife, Judy.

Each year, outstanding "Samaritans of the Year" are recognized. This year's honorees are Margaret Ryan, M.D., and Peter Cracchiolo.

A "Sharin' O' the Green" Chairmen's Reception honoring the "Samaritans of the Year" will be held immediately following Mass at the Electrical Workers' Union Hall, located one block west of the church at 1358 Porter. This reception is a fund-raiser for Most Holy Trinity School. Tickets are $30 per person and include food, drink and entertainment. The tickets may be purchased at the door.

One hundred and seventy-five year-old Most Holy Trinity Church was the first English-speaking parish built in Detroit and originally served Detroit's Irish community. Today, Most Holy Trinity serves a multicultural community that includes Irish, Mexican, Maltese and Puerto Rican parishioners.
